PRODUCER

The Kariaini Coffee Washing Station is located in the Nyeri region of Kenya and serves approximately 900 farmers. This station has three permanent employees. The typical size of farms in this area is around 1 hectare, where farmers grow coffee together with other crops that provide their livelihood.

PROCESSING

After removing the pulp, the coffee cherries are moved to fermentation tanks where fermentation takes place for 14 to 18 hours, depending on the current ambient temperature. Subsequently, the coffee is thoroughly rinsed with water to remove all pulp residues.

The beans are then spread evenly on raised drying beds where they slowly dry for approximately 12 to 20 days. In the hottest seasons, it is covered with shade nets to ensure optimal drying speed.

VARIETY

The SL34 variety is an important coffee variety that originated in the 1930s through research by Scott Agricultural Laboratories in Kenya. Genetically related to the Typica-Arabica family, this variety excels in its ability to grow at high altitudes with sufficient rainfall, allowing it to produce high yields of quality coffee. It is prized for its complex flavor, which includes fresh citrus acidity, full body and a clean, sweet finish.

The SL28 variety is one of the most famous coffee varieties, which was created in the 1930s thanks to the research of Scott Agricultural Laboratories in Kenya. This variety was selected for its excellent drought resistance and ability to grow at medium to high altitudes, making it ideal for growing in a variety of climates. The flavor profile is very complex and distinctive, characterized by high acidity with notes of blackcurrant, berries and citrus. Its flesh is juicy and sweet, often with tropical flavors.
