Jamie Catota and his son William are one of the few small producers still living on their farm and producing coffee in the Palo Campana region on the slopes of the Santa Ana Volcano. This coffee is made up of Red Bourbon and Typica varieties and grown at 1650masl, although they are also growing Gesha and Kenya varieties as well. So as last year the Productor team processed this coffee themselves, carrying out a 120 hour ‘anaerobic’ in cherry maceration before drying the cherries on raised beds for 3-4 weeks. In the cup it’s an intense, funky chocolate bonbon!

Before working with Productor, the Catotas were delivering their coffee to a big mill, who would finance them, at high interest rates and then pay them for their cherry at a price below production cost. They were in a debt trap where their cherry deliveries were used to pay interest and they were not able to get out of debt. Productor are paying them more than twice the C-Market price for their fresh cherries picked up at their farm, which means they cover the costs of drying, dehulling and exporting and provide zero-interest financing. This has allowed the Catotas to thrive once again and you can see this in their healthy trees and in the cherries, which are some of the ripest we see every year.

Note: Funky Chocolate Bonbon (chocolate candies FYI)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0608/0554/6209/products/image_af82f730-d924-457f-a5d6-08d03a8d869e.jpg?v=1638539690
colombia-la-maria-natural
COLOMBIA - Funky Fruity Phoenix (Natural)

Friedhats (Amsterdam)

Colombia - Funky Fruity Phoenix 250g

Note: Funky, Stewed strawberries, Milk chocolate
Variety: Caturra
Producer: Joined effort from 8 farms and 45 producers
Region: Tolima
Altitude: 1500-1700 masl
Process: Natural
Harvest: 2022

Remember your first time? Exposure to the heat starts to break down the natural sugars of the coffee cherries, partially caramelizing them.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0608/0554/6209/products/image_ac35c2ed-0a1f-486b-ab66-61b488af81f5.jpg?v=1639132553
colombia-viani-espresso
COLOMBIA - Viani (Espresso)

Manhattan (Rotterdam)

Colombia - Viani (Espresso) 250g

Stone Fruit, Cocoa, Juicy

Farm: Various small holders
Producer: Cooperative De Operacion Nacional Agropecuaria
Micro region: Cundinaamarcaa
Altitude: 1300-1800masl
Variety: Castillo, Colombia, Typica

Process: Washed

Cundinmarca is a region of Colombia that is new to us at Manhattan coffee roasters. It’s lot #3 this time around, a blend of Colombia and Castillo varieties grown at around 1900 masl and produced by a group of smallholders in the Consaca municipality of Nariño. This coffee was a collaboration between Nordic Approach and Cafe Occidente Co-op to create a “high-end micro blend” from a group of smallholders who produce very small amounts of high quality coffee. Nariño is a challenging place to work because of its many tiny and remote coffee farms on steep hillsides at high altitudes (up to 2200 masl). This blend is a way to keep supporting these farmers despite the quantity they produce, and it tastes great too! With this in mind, we bring you Purpuracae!

We've been working closely with Shady and Elias Bayter for quite some time now. Together, we’ve spent countless hours discussing ideas around processing methods and drying to improve the cup quality of coffee coming from the El Vergel farms. However, this lot is entirely the culmination of work between El Vergel and El Diluvio.

In early 2021 Elias was introduced to Don Ronald at El Diluvio. Ronald has been growing coffee for his entire life and has many rare and exotic varieties that you don't often see grown in Tolima. He has small-scale plots of Sidra, Maragesha, Geisha, and more. Each of his lots are only 1000 - 4000 trees so the production quantity is very limited. When Elias cupped through Don Ronald's lots he offered El Vergel’s services to process some small lots of naturals and other experimental processes for him. The results have been utterly wild.

This particularly special coffee is a very rare mutation of bourbon. It is called by a few names (Don Ronald sells it as Purpuracae) but it is mostly known as Purpurascens Longberry which was found in Brazil in the early 1900s. It has a strong root system that makes it very resistant to drought and it is characterized by the purple color of its foliage.

The plant is tall, the branchings from the main stem are widely spaced and the flowers are pinkish. The seeds are long, slender, and pointed on one side.

In the cup we're tasting big purple grape, violet, and guava. We were all born in the 90's from peasant families in the municipality of Bolívar (Cauca- Colombia). Our families decided to move from the countryside to the city of Popayán in search of better opportunities. Coincidentally, all those families arrived at the Camilo Torres neighborhood, located in a popular sector of the city populated by bold people of a vigorous character who yearn to get ahead. The circumstances that we lived in back then when we did not have much to offer each other, strengthened our friendship to the point we became a new family and we all had unforgettable moments together throughout our childhood and adolescence.

Into adulthood, each one of us took their own course.
